Calls on all the candidates, individuals and groups involved in the race to pledge to run clean and honest campaigns

Albuquerque, NM – Today, Democratic candidate for NM-1 Eric Griego issued a challenge to all of the candidates in the race – Democrat and Republican – to join him in abiding by a clean and honest campaign pledge.  Griego is calling for the pledge in light of recent anonymous smear attacks against him inside the district by anonymous perpetrators outrageously comparing him to flag burners and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“Anonymous smear attacks making outrageous claims to disorient and confuse voters have no place in our democracy,” said Eric Griego.  “While I am extending my benefit of doubt to each of my opponent in this race since no one will claim responsibility, I am compelled to call on them to join me in pledging to run a clean campaign based on honesty and truth about the candidate’s records because the voters deserve better.”

“Let’s all keep the race focused on the ideas, values and issues that matter to the people of this district.”

Eric Griego’s Pledge for Clean Campaign is as follows:

The Pledge for Clean Campaign

I pledge to honor the truth in this campaign.  At no time during this campaign should any candidate, candidate’s representative, supporter or endorsing organization distort the facts or spread falsehoods about any candidate’s record.  I have communicated to my supporters that I will not tolerate any distortion of the facts in this campaign because our community deserves better than that.  I call on each of my opponents in this race – Democrat and Republican alike – to join me in pledging to run a clean and honest campaign.

Eric Griego’s Record of Fighting for Transparency and Reform

Griego has been New Mexico’s leading champion for campaign finance and ethics reforms.  He passed voluntary public financing of elections as an Albuquerque City Councilor, making the city one of the few in the nation to do so.  As a State Senator, he has sponsored bills to limit individual contributions for legislative elections to $250 and to create a strong independent Ethics Commission in the State Legislature.

On Tuesday, January 17th, Griego also became the first candidate in the nation running for a federal office to sign the Occupy/99% Movement’s “99 Pledge”, committing to fight for legislation in Congress to limit corporate influence in our democracy and overturn Citizens United.

Griego is also the first, and still the only, candidate running for Congress in New Mexico’s First District to release a comprehensive campaign platform on campaign finance and ethics reforms, with a proven record to back them up.

About Eric Griego for Congress:

Eric Griego is a New Mexico State Senator and former Albuquerque City Councilor running for the open seat in New Mexico’s First Congressional District.  The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich, who is running for the open U.S. Senate seat.  The NM-1 district is rated “Likely Democratic” by the Cook Political Report and Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball.

Currently, Griego is leading all the candidates in the race in fundraising, with already nearly 14,000 grassroots donors powering his campaign.

Griego is also leading the field in local and national political endorsements and organizational support.  His fast-growing Democratic coalition consists of labor unions, environmental groups, national and local progressive organizations, and local grassroots supporters that already number more than 25,000 members in the district – approximately half of the votes expected to be cast in the 2012 Democratic congressional primary.

Griego’s vast array of national and local endorsements also include labor unions such as the International Brotherhood of Teamster (IBT), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Communications Workers of America (CWA), Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA), the nurses and bakers unions (District 1199NM, BCTGM); environmental groups such as The Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM); progressive netroots, including Blue America PAC, Democracy for America (DFA), MoveOn.org, Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), The Daily Kos; and most of the state and local Democratic elected officials who have endorsed in the race.  These Democratic allies are supporting Griego early because they trust his consistent record of fighting for working families, and because they believe he is the best Democratic candidate to win and hold onto this Democratic seat.
