Democratic candidates are using JPMorgan’s $2 billion loss in campaign attacks against Wall Street, a trend liberal groups predict will escalate between now and election day.

Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren (D) led the charge earlier this week by calling for a “new Glass-Steagall Act” that would limit what types of trades banks can be involved in. She followed that with a radio ad touting her work on Wall Street reform that said, “she told all the Wall Street banks to clean up their act.”

New Mexico House candidate Eric Griego (D), a liberal netroots favorite in a tough primary race, released his own ad on Tuesday calling for “Wall Street bankers who broke the law go to jail.”

Dear Supporter,

A month after Albuquerque Westside resident Alan Witt retired, the economy crashed and he and his wife Melinda lost a substantial amount of their savings, which they’ll never be able to recover. Sadly, Wall Street is still playing by its own rules, and little has changed since the economy crashed.

We need to break up the Wall Street-Washington romance. In Congress, I will fight back for working families to hold Wall Street accountable.

Watch my new television ad here – and chip in $3 to help me fight back for working families in Congress.

In this race for Congress in New Mexico’s First District, I am the one Democrat with a long, consistent record of taking on the status quo and powerful corporate interests. I’ve taken on predatory lenders, created an Inspector General’s office, and fought to get corporate money out of Albuquerque elections.

I’m proud of my record of taking on the status quo, even in my own party, to change the system.

Today, Democratic congressional candidate Eric Griego became the first congressional candidate in the nation to air a TV ad calling for Wall Street bankers to be held accountable for their actions. Griego also released his platform to strengthen Wall Street reform and to prosecute bankers who broke the law.

Click here to watch the TV ad.

The ad features Westside Albuquerque residents Alan and Melinda Witt. A month after Alan Witt retired, the economy crashed and he and his wife lost much of their savings, which they will never be able to recover.

“To this day, not one Wall Street banker who broke the law, tanked the economy, and took away people’s homes and savings are in jail,” Griego said. “Sadly, Wall Street bankers are still playing by their own rules, and we need tough reforms to hold them accountable. We need to break up the Wall Street-Washington romance by electing more reform-minded Democrats who will not sell out the public to appease Wall Street lobbyists.”

“If candidates like Elizabeth Warren and me win this year, it will send a signal to the political establishment that it’s time for real Wall Street reform.”

In Congress, Griego will fight for the following five reforms:

Fight to increase 20-fold the number of investigators for the financial crimes federal task force led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Right now, this task force only has 55 investigators and prosecutors. The Savings and Loan crisis of the 1980s was staffed with over 1,000 investigators, experts, and prosecutors. That effort yielded more than 600 convictions and $130,000,000 for taxpayers. One of the first bills that Griego will sponsor will be to increase the funding and staffing for this financial crimes task force.

Push for increased funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – the federal watchdog on Wall Street, created by Elizabeth Warren – to strengthen its investigative capabilities. Even a small additional investment can avert billions, or trillions, of dollars in economic damage by Wall Street.

Push the U.S. Justice Department to more aggressively prosecute white-collar crimes by Wall Street bankers. Members of Congress can exert key leverage with the Justice Department to make investigations and prosecutions happen.

Strengthen the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and close the loophole in the legislation’s “Volcker Rule” that was exploited by JPMorgan recently – when their risky bets lost $2 billion. Many of the legislation’s provisions are designed to go in effect in 2014, so the rules are still being written. Congress can’t allow Wall Street bankers to write their own rules – we need Wall Street reform to stay on the agenda in Congress.

Pass a new Glass-Steagall Act to separate investment banks from traditional banking – so people’s life savings are not gambled away by Wall Street. Elizabeth Warren and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee started a grassroots campaign for a new Glass-Steagall yesterday, and within hours over 40,000 people joined the cause. I’m proud to be one of those people – and passing a new Glass-Steagall will be a priority of mine in Congress.

If you’ve been to one of my events, you’ve probably heard me talk about my mother, Mary. She was a single mom who worked two minimum-wage jobs to support us. Despite her hard work, we would not have made it without programs like Headstart, food stamps, and school lunches.

Thanks to Social Security and Medicare, my mom had a dignified retirement. She stayed in the same house for most of her life, the house that my wife, and son, and I live in now. Like most of us, my mother shaped my values. Like me, she believed that we’re all in this together. She passed away 10 years ago, but I know she would have been very proud of us.

President Obama just spoke out in support of full marriage equality for LGBT citizens. As a long-time supporter of marriage equality, l applaud his decision — let’s work to end all discrimination.

Now it’s time for Congress to do something about it. In Washington, I will be a part of making marriage equality a reality for all Americans.

In the State Senate, I worked to defeat the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). I also led the fight to pass the Domestic Partnership Bill, HB 603, because I believed it was the first step towards ending discrimination. In Congress, I will support the passage of the Employee Non-Discrimination Act and work to fully repeal DOMA. I will also work for full separation pay for service members who were honorably discharged but had their separation pay cut in half because of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Full equality for LGBT citizens is the civil rights issue of our time. Let’s get to work.

Onward!

Right now, there is only one in-person voting location in each county. Click here for a list of locations and hours. Multiple Early Voting centers will open on May 19th, and we’ll send out those locations soon.

Supporter –

In the last month of the campaign, Eric’s centrist and conservative opponents have resorted to full-time negative campaigning. They’ve spent the past few days spamming news outlets with six different negative press releases, made robo-calls, and set up a fake blog – all targeting only Eric. Because they can’t compete with our momentum, they’re resorting to desperate attacks on our progressive supporters, the Democratic base.

We need to increase our positive message to counter these dishonest attacks. Will you chip in $3 to our Democratic Values fund?

They’ve said that Eric has support from “corrupt third party” groups, but we don’t call environmentalists, teachers, and progressives “third party groups.” We call them the Democratic base.

Organizations representing core Democratic values like the Sierra Club, the American Federation of Teachers, MoveOn, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee are not the same as billionaire and corporate-funded Super PACs. If you agree, will you chip in $3 now?

While our opponents spend their time on personal attacks, we are running a clean and honest campaign. Eric will never let the Tea Party Republicans cut Social Security and Medicare while giving tax breaks to millionaires. Chip in $3 now, and help us get out this positive message.

Thanks. Let’s win for our Democratic values.
